Project description_

To paraphrase Pedro Almodóvar, the project could be called “Towers on the edge of an economic crisis” … The  project was born  in 2007 as a natural continuation of the victory of the competition organized by the Parque Tecnológico de Fuente Álamo in 2006 for the realization of the Centro de Desarrollo, Innovación y Negocio (Cedin), a building of about 10,000 square meters destined to offices for rent to small companies with high technological content and service functions to the activity of the park, such as a conference hall, training rooms, a gym, a restaurant / cafeteria and a kindergarten for the children in mainstream employees.

To exploit the maximum buildable surface area available, increasing the once would be considered as rentable, he thought to occupy at height of -4.50 m the entire plot  for all the auxiliary  functions and to squeeze and locate part of the offices ( about 6,000 square meters) in four towers elliptical base of 4, 6 and 8 floors.

Seen from the outside the Cedin complex results to be constituted by only four buildings rested on the ground, since we hide the private function in the basement.  A deformed cloverleaf “cut” the ground floor’s surface, and it generates four green patios , each surrounded  by the windows functions as  restaurant, gym, nursery,  and foyer of the conference hall – of which become natural continuation and external area transformed respectively in open-air terrace of the cafeteria, rest and relaxation area, playground area and outdoor receptions.

Thanks to the complete transparency of closing windows of these spaces, the ground floor slab turns out to be a thin surface which is opposed to the office tower. The plan typology characterized by  a oval rounded shape with a central core containing the block stairs / elevators and toilets, allows to best use the space for offices because it provides flexibility within the space.

The exterior facade, originally designed with triangular supporting structure and white lacquered aluminum and glass panels, was replaced for cost issue with a more traditional brick façade covered with Ondulit panels colored in different shades of gray .

Unfortunately, the economic crisis which occurred in Spain, caused the failure of Immobiliare who at the time was financing the project. Therefore the construction site has been suspended and abandoned  by the Contractor without completing the work.

Inside the building only the reinforced concrete structures are built. In regards the exterior Contractor completed the work till the insulation layer only

The Basque Country is one of the European regions where it is strongest attention to the sustainability of completed buildings. This is why one of the fundamental conditions imposed by the competition for the new Palace of Music and Congress Centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz was the realization of a building that would become a reference at European level both from a cultural point of view architecture.

Accordingly our project proposed the possibility of leaving completely free and filtering ground 50% of the available plot, and to destine the empty 50%  to the planting of tall trees with the aim to create at the same time an amazing natural foyer.  A building in a forest, as opposed to the typical monumentality of concert halls and convention centers, broken down into 4 volumes all having in common the entrance foyer and completely immersed in a completely natural environment.

Sustainability is not just about making a building surrounded by green. Therefore it consists in applying what are commonly  defined as a passive systems in the energy management, absolutely essential and of central importance that in our proposal are even more important because they generate the design process.

The 70% of the roof was made with a plant cover for a specific technical  reason and not purely propaganda. Thanks to the excellent insulating performances during the winter season and to the refreshing value during the summer , that kind of roof could provide sustainable benefit  while ensuring a maximum efficiency.

To increase the natural circulation of the interior spaces, we designed a sort solar chimneys, as a sky light,  that characterize the building’ appeal due to their shape, creating a sort of artificial roof path. Aforementioned skylight are  openable truncated pyramid structure  carefully designed, located  and distributed in the roof. That elements allow through the daily solar exposure the heating of the air present inside them.

In this way, thanks to the difference thermal gradient between the cones and the air present within the building and exploiting the natural convective motion of the same to the higher temperatures, they generate  movements of air that cool naturally the interiors. Skylights’ locations have greatly influenced the general layout . Accordingly the halls, to achieve the best  acoustic performance, are characterized by a very simple shape but internally characterized by a sophisticated design in order to ensure the best quality in terms of acoustic point of view.

Project description_

Within the program A.G.U.A. the Zapatero government,  we were commissioned  to design and be responsible for  architectural and landscaping integration of complex for the desalination of seawater. Client’s request was to convert the project to install a “transparent” system of information and communication of the industrial transformation process, since it was at that time very disputed and subject of many complaints from the population because it was wrongly considered to be reasonable of the increased pollution of the city.

It was not only to “open the doors to the people” – which is actually something impossible since this type of system has a strictly restricted access – but also to create a path, totally independent and without interfering with daily activities, that it would freely used by anyone. The request was to have a new building that would representative of the new approach of the company becoming a new space for the citizenship.

As a Concept  we get inspiration from the foam, not only for his own relationship with the foam sea, however mostly because we were interested in its cellular structure as continuous aggregate of cells, connected spaces, fragile and constantly changing.

The foam concept led us to imagine a path similar to a wire grid structure “stretched” over the various buildings and warehouses that, thanks to its alternation of full and empty spaces, allowed to be viable and penetrated by the visitors and at the same time it could be the protagonist of the  different phases and components of the industrial process.A real “Water Route” where visitors could follow the path of water from sea water to drinking water, verifying personally the different stages of the process.

In this way the visitor has the chance to be directly in  contact with the industrial process that becomes the main actor of that amazing and exciting experience .Facilities as cafe’, restaurant, conference room , exhibition center, and small shop are displaced in the beginning of the exhibition path.

Building’s roof is architecturally treated to be an artificial landscape. A place to be, and to stay as it would a public artificial garden, with children’s playground, a kiosk and fountains with water coming from the plant itself.

Unfortunately, due to the change of government, to the budget’s reductions  and its related  slowdown in the process, our design has undergone numerous and substantial changes in its final form.
