Project description_

The competition involves the construction of a new Palace of Sports for the City of Bern within existing sports area located near an urban park. The request was to design a building able to accommodate the most important sport event with 2,000 seats and a secondary gym instead intended not only dedicated to the training of local teams, but also available  for the sport event of neighborhood schools. Both should have been equipped with the necessary auxiliary rooms, such as changing rooms, press room, offices for coaches and management, department stores and multi-purpose halls, as well as a parking areas for almost 150 cars.

Due to difference in height of about 4 m noticed in the plot we found almost natural to use aforementioned differences as a fundamental starting point for the development of the project. The aim was to take advantage of this formless plot and to use it as the main concept of our design. Accordingly we decided to develop and to design an artificial urban landscape, used as a public green park,  that becomes the roof of the ancillary functions including a portion of the parking areas used by the athletes and those who attend the sports hall.

The gym, to observe the correct height, was located at -6.00 m. Therefore the main public  entrance , lobby , and public parking entrance were conceived as a continuation of the public space of the city creating a direct connection with it. That spaces are designed as a mineral hard-scape, finished in Porfido and Cement.

The tribunes are conceived as a pure volume that stands out from the roof. The intention was to design a visible and recognizable element, that should evoke the image of being a jewel.

The structure of this volume, in order to respect the Swiss building tradition, was designed completely in wood, structure and finish as well. Moreover the roof’s main structure is in steel trusses, and the roof’s final finish layer was assumed to be in ETFA, an extremely light material with a  great thermal insulation  and an excellent capacity to diffuse the natural light.

The dome’s shape that identifies the Beach Club La Manga has always been a characteristic element of the dune landscape of land that separates the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean sea. It was the roof of a 2-storey beach villa belonged to one of the last ministers during Franco time. In the early 2000s the building was bought by the company Grupo Collado with the intention of renovating and to turn it into an attractive place.

After the first inspection, we immediately noticed that as not only the original interior spaces were absolutely anonymous and not reflecting the quality of the dome, but above the dome ‘s structure were impressively damage and compromised due to the  corrosive effects of seawater. Therefore we decided to act in two different directions: the first to demolish and to remove all the elements that could affect negatively the purity of dome’s shape, the second to remove  and replace completely dome’s  steel structure: a risky and complex action that has focused most of the time devoted to the construction site.

Once freed the original dome’s structure,  we built in the central area 3 different wooden volumes, containing the bar, the pool changing rooms and the restaurant kitchen. The upper floor space was dedicated to a full open sitting area and to a big outdoor terrace located in the perimeter of the building from which to admire the landscape through the dome’s opening.

An elliptical concrete staircase connects the two floors. A sliding glass door fully operable from both floors, enables the complete permeability and continuity between  interior and exterior spaces.  The above system makes creates flexible spaces and dissolves the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. Aforementioned perception is more emphasized  during  summer time when it is be possible to keep the sliding door system open to create a unique flexible outdoor space that face the seaside.

The competition for the Ciudad del Medioambiente foresaw the recovery and securing of an abandoned stone quarry located in Santomera in the region of Murcia, moreover the construction of an eco-medioambientale information center and sustainable development and a school for environmental professionals. The competition’s aim was to create a  City of Sustainability that could be a  reference not in Spain moreover it could be internationally well-known.

After a thorough study of the quarry conditions, conducted in collaboration with a specialized team of mining engineers, structural, geologists and biologists, it quickly became clear that the budget made available was not sufficient for the realization of all that was required in the program.

Ciudad del Medioambiente - Santomera, Murcia
Ciudad del Medioambiente - Museo

To use of the economic resources available at best, we decided  to invest most of the budget in the construction of the two buildings required – the geological and forestry museum and school for environmental operators – and to design a training course characterized by different architectural elements.Being practically impossible to implement a real commissioning of a safety path in the mountain, we carefully studied and defined  the areas considered  risky because  of the falling rocks and we stated the maximum distance that these blocks had reached: it was possible to draw the educational process at an appropriate distance and fully under secure areas.

Within these safe areas we chosen the two wider – one in the entrance area and the other further in the path – where we located respectively the school and the museum. The school is a building of about 1.700mq “embedded” into the rock, characterized by glazed windows facing the north side.

With the inclusion of the building in the rock, we obtained that the sides most exposed to sunlight – and thus to the daytime warming – would suffer a marked improvement in its thermal inertia of the building; while the window on the north side, has not only got a good illumination of the interior without overheating problems, but it has created a panoramic view towards the mountainous Sierra surrounding the Murcia Region.

The geological-forestry museum is constituted by two separate buildings with a total of about 1.400mq shaped urchin, whose “spines” are represented by the prisms at times to exploit the effect that open-fire and allow the circulation of ‘ air inside, other windows for the entry of light, sometimes completely blind to protect from eviction. Distribution  and orientation of the different prisms has been designed to get the best from each of their characteristics.
